Neuro Disorders: The Scale of the Problem

Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease in The United States. There are 5.2 million sufferers, 454,000 new cases diagnosed per year in the United States alone and there are 36 million sufferers world wide.

Parkinson’s Disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the United States. There are approximately 1 million sufferers, 60,000 new cases diagnosed per year in the United States alone and 7-10 million sufferers world wide.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease, motor neuron disease): There are 30,000 sufferers in the United States, 5,600 new cases diagnosed per year in the United States alone and 450,000 sufferers world wide.

These are all neurodegenerative diseases. The pharmaceutical industry has made some progress with drugs that alleviate some of the symptoms, but as yet there is no cure. Scientific data shows that by slight modulation of the mitochondrial membrane potential we can reduce the production of reactive oxygen species. This could slow down or possibly stop the progression of these devastating diseases.
